CHAPTER EIGHT

I hit the dirt and sigh with utter bliss.

Oh god... lying down feels good. So, so good.

The ground’s hard. There’s a rock in my side. And I’m pretty sure that someone has peed nearby. But it’s the most comfortable I’ve been in days. I’m off my feet. My eyes are closed and I am gonna get some sleep!

Finally.

It’s actually cold. And getting colder every day. I pull up the collar of my coat to shield my eyes from the rising sun, roll onto my side, snuggle into my arm and yawn deeply.

Finally, sleep.

‘Scar... hey, Scar... you awake?’ I keep my eyes closed as Sky whispers in my ear. I will not be kept awake again as she babbles on and on about the theory that the zoms might be aliens from outer space or that maybe we could develop a way to train them into doing menial tasks for us.

She’ll give up. She’ll leave me be. She’ll-

‘HEY, SCARLETT!’

‘WHAT?!’ I sit up and glare at her smiling face and sparkling eyes. ‘What do you want?!’

‘Ohh,’ she giggles. ‘You get so mad when you’re tired. Like a big grizzly-’

‘I’ve been up for twenty-three hours straight. I have three hours in which to get some sleep. So, this better be bloody important, Sky. Like world-ending kind of important.’

She scratches her head and her eyebrows squish together. ‘But... the world has ended. How can it end again-’

I take a long and deep breath, pinch the ridge of my nose and shake my head. ‘What do you want, Sky?’ I ask tiredly.

She looks so excited and leans in close. ‘I just thought you might like to know...’

‘Know what?’ I groan. ‘Sky, I’m really-’

‘The rules are you or Elder has to help.’

‘What are you babbling about?’

‘If you’d rather Elder help me-’

‘Sky! Stop being so-’

‘There’s a Class Two out there,’ she tells me teasingly.

‘A Class Two?’ I feel a grin creep across my lips. ‘Really? We haven’t seen one in weeks. You sure?’

She nods slowly. ‘There it is... I love that smile. Come play, Scar. Come play. Come play...’ She starts bouncing up and down like a child. In her lap is my back harness complete with katanas. ‘C’mon... you’re not that tired, are ya?’ she asks, holding them out to me teasingly.

I take the harness and excitedly jump to my feet. ‘Let’s go.’

The structure we’re currently using as a base camp was in ruins well before we screwed up the planet. Hundreds of years before, in fact. It was a circular keep. A stone fort a couple of metres thick and about eight metres high. Feeling a little like home, it forms a complete circle. Except for the one archway on the east side letting us in and out. It’s in fantastic condition for... well, ruins. It fits perfectly with what we need. It’s on a high mound surrounded by a deep, dry ditch. We can see about a mile in all directions before the view is obscured by hills and woodland. We’re overlooking a river which we’ve been using for fresh water and amazingly.
